One of the biggest surprises I’ve encountered as a private patient advocate

Is how many people are taking 20 - 30 medications. Doctors are well-trained in prescribing medications, but not in deprescribing them. I often work with clients and their doctors to clarify which medications are still necessary, weighing the pros and cons of stopping versus continuing each one. Clients appreciate the opportunity to make fully informed decisions about their medications. A new study by Jing, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, found that reducing high blood pressure medications in older nursing home residents was associated with a 12% lower chance of cognitive decline. Among those with dementia, deprescribing was associated with a 16% reduced likelihood of cognitive decline.
