Tramadol Use and Dementia Risk: New Findings You Need to Know

I’ve noticed that certain medications prescribed by doctors often seem to come and go in fads. Years ago, Darvocet was widely used as a supposedly less addictive pain reliever until it was pulled from the market due to cardiac concerns.

More recently, I’ve observed a rise in Tramadol (Ultram) prescriptions for my clients dealing with pain. However, an October 2024 study by Oh, published in Nature, reveals that long-term Tramadol use in older adults with musculoskeletal pain is linked to an increased risk of all-cause dementia, especially Alzheimer’s disease.

While Tramadol can be helpful for pain relief, it is not harmless. You might want to think twice before taking it for more than a week or two.
