Why Some Shoulder Pain Treatments Fail: The Role of Central Sensitization
A new study by Ahısha and colleagues published in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation reveals why some patients with chronic shoulder pain don’t respond to steroid injections. One explanation is central sensitization, in which the nervous system amplifies the sensation of pain.
This well-done study showed that people with shoulder impingement syndrome who did not improve with a standard injection had higher scores on tests that indicated central sensitization, psychologic distress and altered pain perceptions. It is difficult for doctors and patients when pain persists despite standard treatment. This study could help guide understanding and treatment options for people with chronic pain problems.
